Hi Guys,
Anyone have any issues after installing the cold air intake from 6th Element? I am getting a ton of error "Mass Airflow Sensor" popping up on the diagnostic test when I hook it up which is making every warning flash on my dash and putting car in "limp" mode. The tech said its needs to be tuned, given there is so much air now passing through the sensor, but not sure if that is correct.

Any help is much appreciated.

Double check that all pipes are snug and clamps are tight. I simply took the filter out to clean it, and it threw codes. I also had a pipe come loose and was a bit embarrassed to take it into the dealership to have them identify the root cause. The dealership did not charge anything and wrote it up to not have any negative impact, so that was reassuring.

Thank you Fred- I checked all the clamps, pipe, and made sure the sensor was facing correctly. Not sure if it requires a tune or not because I like the product, but dont want to void the warranty.

Have you tried disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery for about 5 minutes to clear the codes? I installed my CAI from SXTH well before obtaining a tune. Also, clean the MAF with MAF cleaner.

If you have a pro, it needs a tune (looks like you have a Pro). If you don't, it should not cause a code without a tune. The tech explanation is a poor one because it does not bring any more air in at idle than the factory intake does. However, if the diameter of a tube is larger or smaller, it will skew how the ECU interprets the data from the mass airflow sensor. This causes high or low fuel trims and can result in a check engine light. In the case of a Pro, the factory diameter is larger than the one on the SXTH intake, so the same amount of air reads as higher airflow to the ECU through the smaller diameter. The ECU sees that additional air and adds fuel to accommodate it. This results in a rich air-fuel ratio in the exhaust, and the O2 sensor then trims the fuel negative, which you see on the scanner. The only way to fix this on a Pro is to tune it, and I have tuned many of them on Pros with that intake. Directly from the SXTH page:

I am just worried about voiding the warranty. I do have a Pro, correct.

A tune does not necessarily mean the entire factory warranty is suddenly gone. Warranty claims are usually evaluated based on the issue at hand and whether Toyota believes a modification may have contributed to the failure.
This applies to other modifications too. An intake, intercooler, downpipe, larger tires, lift kit, suspension changes, or even aftermarket lighting and electrical accessories could potentially come into play if they are relevant to the issue being repaired.
With the COBB Accessport, you can flash the truck back to the stock calibration and completely uninstall the Accessport if needed. That does not guarantee how any future warranty claim will be handled, but it does give you the ability to return the truck to stock for service visits.
For what it’s worth, I’ve tuned hundreds of these newer Toyotas and warranty concerns have not been an issue for my customers.
