I did my rear Diff oil change last week @ 30K and to be honest the oil still looked "pretty good". Of course it had metal sparkles and sludge on the plug but it still had quite a nice gold tone to it.

I just went for a ride and tried it at destination and back, I think it happened as well. It's so darn windy today that it's hard to hear your own thoughts... nevertheless I think i did notice something there after a while sitting there.
