Yea it's just challenging cuz I am not sure how many people are actually taking these things off road up mountains (yet, I know the 6th gen just came out). I got the same response from the dealer and Toyota to put it in S mode or 4L, I will say at least my dealer seems to actually care and...

And I assume the one the dealer created was assigned an official TAS case number and assigned to a TAS agent? At least then even though they gave you a bunch of BS it is officially logged. I have no idea what Toyota will do once they have more of these cases but maybe they will pay more...

Was it case you opened with Toyota or a case the dealer opened with Toyota?

Just took the 4Runner up a mountain on a narrow, paved road and the tranny temps started going up again so I put it in S mode (S2) which helped though it still got a little warm. I was going around 15- 20 mph (it was a narrow winding mountain road, so I wanted to avoid any head-on collisions)...

Yea I don't need to be driving that slow the whole way, I should be able to make it up a hill in 4H without having to switch back and forth between 4H and 4L every time I slow down for a rock

We got the OR Hybrid just so it could go a bit further and we wouldn't have to carry gas cans. We did the Pony Express trail in Utah and Nevada - total distance between gas stations was 343 miles and we probably would have made it but we went out of the way and got gas just to be cautious.

The transmission is overworking and Toyota doesn't have a software update for it yet. The cooling fan is working fine and the fluids are good. There are workarounds but nothing so far to fix the underlying issue.

Yea people have done that and in the Tacoma too I believe, it's just not something you should "have" to do as it's essentially a band-aid to an underlying issue that Toyota should ultimately fix.

If you're getting a 6th Gen and are taking it off-road, just know that the transmission overheats on slow uphill climbs and you'll have to keep it in 4L or manually shift it.
