  1. Taking a Deeper Look at Transmission Overheating in 4Hi

Sorry I'm a little late to this, I've taken a hiatus on a mountaintop that my Accord got me to cuz my 4Runner had these issues. Instances of overheating have happened both off-road (switched to 4L) and on-road (switched to manual 2S). Transmission Shifter Position: "4HI" (off-road) and “D”...
  2. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Clay doesn't appear to be driving up a mountain.
  3. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Don't need it though and can't use it on-road
  4. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Yea it's just challenging cuz I am not sure how many people are actually taking these things off road up mountains (yet, I know the 6th gen just came out). I got the same response from the dealer and Toyota to put it in S mode or 4L, I will say at least my dealer seems to actually care and...
  5. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

And I assume the one the dealer created was assigned an official TAS case number and assigned to a TAS agent? At least then even though they gave you a bunch of BS it is officially logged. I have no idea what Toyota will do once they have more of these cases but maybe they will pay more...
  6. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Was it case you opened with Toyota or a case the dealer opened with Toyota?
  7. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Just took the 4Runner up a mountain on a narrow, paved road and the tranny temps started going up again so I put it in S mode (S2) which helped though it still got a little warm. I was going around 15- 20 mph (it was a narrow winding mountain road, so I wanted to avoid any head-on collisions)...
  8. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

I have Toyo AT3s on my 4Runner, around 30 pounds each and no extra additional weight.
  9. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

I was in 4H on a gravel mountain road, not rock crawling, going around 15-20 mph with intermittent slowing down for rocks and other stuff.
  10. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Yea I don't need to be driving that slow the whole way, I should be able to make it up a hill in 4H without having to switch back and forth between 4H and 4L every time I slow down for a rock
  11. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

I was wondering if it was happening in the Land Cruiser, sorry you are experiencing it too. Yea, I know it can be a pain in the butt but taking it to the dealership and making sure they find it in the ROB and they file a case with Toyota seems to be the official way Toyota will keep a log of...
  12. 6th gen vs 5th gen 4Runner decision

That too. Knock on wood ours hasn't had that.
  13. 6th gen vs 5th gen 4Runner decision

Yea until they fix this transmission issue we have in the 6th Gen and the Tacomas I won't be totally happy
  14. 6th gen vs 5th gen 4Runner decision

We got the OR Hybrid just so it could go a bit further and we wouldn't have to carry gas cans. We did the Pony Express trail in Utah and Nevada - total distance between gas stations was 343 miles and we probably would have made it but we went out of the way and got gas just to be cautious.
  15. 6th gen vs 5th gen 4Runner decision

The transmission is overworking and Toyota doesn't have a software update for it yet. The cooling fan is working fine and the fluids are good. There are workarounds but nothing so far to fix the underlying issue.
  16. 6th gen vs 5th gen 4Runner decision

Yea people have done that and in the Tacoma too I believe, it's just not something you should "have" to do as it's essentially a band-aid to an underlying issue that Toyota should ultimately fix.
  17. 6th gen vs 5th gen 4Runner decision

If you're getting a 6th Gen and are taking it off-road, just know that the transmission overheats on slow uphill climbs and you'll have to keep it in 4L or manually shift it.
  18. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

Just got the 4Runner back from the second dealer. They ran a health check and found no fault codes. They then ran the Record of Behavior (ROB) and found the two instances of high transmission temps. The first dealer I went to did not find this. The dealer that did created a Technical...
  19. 2025 4Runner Transmission Overheating on Climbs Off-Road

I know right, I already been to three and am going to try some more.
