The 4wd models had Full-Time 4wd standard on the V8's, and it was selectable on the V6's. As such, the transfer case had a differential that could be locked. Which would then perform the same as a Part-Time 4wd transfer case.
The V6 4wd 4th gen (like the OP has/had) had what was called by a...
In the previous 3rd, 4th and 5th gens, it required replacing the entire rear axle with one equipped with the diff locker. OR removing the open rear 3rd member, acquiring an OEM 3rd member with the diff locker and correct gearing to match the front diff, and then modifying the axle housing to...
The 5th gen has a vacuum pump that checks the EVAP system integrity after the vehicle has been off for awhile, and certain temperature parameters have been met.
This sounds the same, so I assume the 6th gen has the same system. It should be mentioned in the owners manual.
Completely normal.
If you're driving up a steep incline that requires 4wd, and doing so at a slow speed, you should be in 4Lo. This will dramatically increase the mechanical advantage of moving the vehicle, and the torque convertor won't slip as much, which can lead to overheating the transmission fluid.
I'd say...
It would be difficult to find a measurable difference in MPG between having a spare and not.
If you're that concerned about fuel economy, you bought the wrong vehicle.
It sounds like the AC compressor is just engaging and disengaging. The idle speed will increase when it engages, and the idle speed will drop when it disengages. The clutch on the compressor will also make a clicking noise as it engages and disengages.
Here's a review of a Gas non-hybrid 4wd Limited. The transfer case shifter has 4hi Full-time, 4hi lock, and 4lo lock positions. So the gas-only 4wd Limited, is equipped as you hoped.
I would say that's a mistake in the online builder.
It says that the gas Limited has Full-time 4wd. That means it has a transfer case. So at the very least it would have the high range ratio of 1.00:1.
Unless Toyota is going REALLY cheap in their de-contenting, and eliminated the low range...
The full-time 4wd 4Runners (available in Limited and Platinum trims) have 4hi Full-time, 4hi locked, and 4lo locked. So yes, the differential in the Transfer case of those models can be locked in 4hi, and by default it locks in 4lo.
In 1997 I bought a new 3rd gen SR5, V6, 4wd, 5-speed manual, rear diff locker, Moonroof, factory leather, premium sound, etc. It's MSRP was $34,000+.
According to the Consumer Price Index, that is equivalent to just over $67,000 today. About the same MSRP as a 6th gen TRD Pro, or Trailhunter...
Thanks for the reply. That is very disappointing to hear they are plastic.
I want to like the 6th gen, and I'm trying to find a reason to replace my 5th gen TRD ORP, but cost-cutting measures like that aren't helping.
I bought my first 4Runner, a 3rd gen SR5, when I was 28. I had an SR5 Extracab 4wd Hilux, and an FZJ80 Landcruiser before the first 4Runner. It seems like yesterday...
I have a low-mile 5th gen TRD ORP, currently.
I am not sure that I am going to buy a 6th gen 4Runner. I need to see one in person and drive it to decide. I used to work on Toyota's at a Dealer, and have owned many of them. Including a 3rd gen and 5th gen 4Runner. The 5th gen TRD ORP is very low miles, so I'll either be keeping it, or...
My 5th gen TRD ORP has a Moonroof. All of my previous Toyota trucks and SUV's have had them too. I use them regularly, and wouldn't have bought those vehicles without one.
