This is not a flame/troll post. Just my observations from following the data for the past 60 days, using the excellent data feeds provided by user Gerg-G. Data used is what was being reported as of May 2, 2025, and all figures shown are for the US market only.

Current inventory (Factory to port, Port to dealer, at dealer) shows 257 Pros and 440 Trailhunters. Of that inventory, 89 of the Pros are pre-sold (35%), while 93 of the Trailhunters are pre-sold (21%).

Below is a graphic I created showing the to-date sales volume for both trims, 412 Pros sold and 266 Trailhunters sold. If we add the current inventory + sold inventory, we can see the two trims are pretty close in their totals: 669 Pros and 706 Trailhunter.

The TRD Pro 4Runner is outselling the 4Runner Trailhunter by almost 40%. Why?

Given that they trucks are priced identically I was expecting the take ratio to be roughly equal. Given the near identical volumes shipped here I assume Toyota thought the same. I briefly considered the Trailhunter, but I did not like the look of the snorkel, nor the silver front and rear fascias. The lack of an exclusive color was also a deciding factor for me. Having previously owned a Pro 4Runner I also enjoyed how the suspension was set-up for high-speed running over bumps; it makes it a blast to drive.

Have any of you considered the Trailhunter but the changed your mind? If you never considered it, how come?

The Trailhunter is better equipped for what I use my vehicle for - specifically overlanding, off-grid camping, trips to Costco (sigh), etc. but I bought the TRD Pro instead because of a few reasons:

1) No moonroof, especially in a vehicle that I can roll down the back window as well, is a dealbreaker for me. I had a 2nd gen back in the day and driving around on a nice day with both the roof and back window open was something that I missed.

2) The high-air intake sounds ridiculous imo.

3) I really didn't like the interior colors, especially when compared to the TRD Pro's. The slate gray and orange/yellow accents just aren't for me.

4) Not a fan of the bronze wheels. I know they can be changed out, but I didn't want to drop that much money on a vehicle and then turn around and spend more for mainly cosmetic reasons.

5) I didn't want to drop $1800(ish) for a roof rack that doesn't have the weight rating to hold both my RTT and awning. I really like the ARB roof rack, and they make some great gear, but that weight rating killed it for me.

We also went with the Pro in Mudbath. But highly considered the Trailhunter Everest(upon availability). Very happy with the Pro but the Trailhunter is still really unique.

In my opinion i think the PRO will ultimately always outsell the Trail hunter and i suspect it will hold its resale value better over the Trail hunter aswell over time.

One thing i will say it my search for a PRO i noticed trailhunters being significantly less expensive than the PRO.

I realized that a lot of the popular PIOs coming on PROs is standard equipment on the Trailhunter. This has led me to see Trailhunters selling as close to MSRP + destination fee over the PRO and other trim models.

Using me as an example for the PRO i am getting has predator steps, ARB roof rack and onboard air compressor coming as a PIO.

If i was getting a Trailhunter all those items albeit rock sliders instead of steps would already be baked into the MSRP resulting in me saving 3-4k.

The wheels on the Trailhunter are hideous. I am not going to spend 70k on a rig to immediately need to spend $2k more for new wheels.

How do you like the Mudbath? I am trying to decide between that and the black. Thanks.

I chose the trailhunter over the pro because I didn’t like the mudbath color and I didn’t want black, gray or white, didn’t want a moonroof since I don’t even use the one on my car. The downfall of the trailhunter is the hideous snorkel but it’s tolerable since I do not ever drive with the windows down and the ugly bronze wheels. But, the wheels will stay until the tires need to be replaced and then I’ll get different wheels.

I went with a Trailhunter. I strongly considered a Pro. I think a big part of the reason the Pro is outselling the Trailhunter is the name. Everyone knows what a TRD Pro is, whether they’ve had 4Runners in the past or not. It’s always been the top-of-the-line off-roading trim. The Trailhunter had never been a trim before (the trail edition had but I’d bet the Pro probably outsold that year-for-year as well). I think if people have money to burn and start looking at 4Runners, and want the best of the best, the Pro is where they are initially drawn, regardless of how well-suited it is for their needs. For me specifically, the Trailhunter is better suited for how I’ll use it. I won’t be doing much high-speed desert running here in Michigan. Hell, the Trailhunter is a tad overkill for how I’ll use it but it’s fun, and has most of the stuff I’d want to add to it (suspension, compressor, steel skids, rock rails, etc.), covered by warranty.

Is that a facelift OG SHO in your thumbnail? Rad. What a kick in the balls that car was 😁 My buddy had a Gen 1 (90?) and that thing was mental, especially for 1990. Sad you never see them anymore.

Yep, ‘93. Most have indeed rusted away but there are a few folks keeping theirs alive and running. Still a lot of fun to drive even if it isn’t the fastest thing on the road.

I think you hit it on the head here.

I haven't bought anything yet, but I 100% will not buy a Trailhunter because of the snorkel, and that's the only reason.

Funny. I would buy it for that, but not with those ugly wheels. Lol.
