This is the kind of spontaneous publicity that MAKES people!!!
(Apologies for the film reference but I just picked up my Trailhunter yesterday)
Updated with first impressions review:
After having my Trailhunter for 48 hours, I've got a couple of first impressions. Bear with me since I've been driving a Gen 1 4Runner for the last 39 years.
First, I notice that there's a bit of vibration in the hood when you're at highway speeds. It's just enough to make me think that a rubber bumper of some sort would have been nice.
Next, the map lights: It's a physical switch with tactile feedback so you'd think something is happening. The day I got it, I got into the vehicle in the dark and turned that light on to read the manual. After about ten minutes or so, the light turned off as did all the other lights. I thought "Okay, it times out so you don't drain your battery." Fine. But pressing the button again had no effect. Seriously? IMHO, that should have turned them on again and restarted the timeout timer. Yes, I know there's a rocker switch but I didn't realize that because I couldn't see it in the dark. I have a similar beef about the lights in the luggage area. No switch back there to turn them on after they time out? Speaking of light, the multimedia display screen comes on with that warning message which I get is a requirement but it's full blasting white and in the dark is blinding. Thanks for killing off my night vision.
That feature called "RSA - Road Sign Assistance" is creepy as hell. It's basically ratting you out when you're over the speed limit. I'll bet that turning it off doesn't actually prevent data from getting recorded in the telemetry. Makes me want to put a sticker over the camera but that would have obvious side effects. Yes, a lot of companies have been found to record data and share it with insurance companies but that doesn't make it any less insidious.
IMHO, the field of view is better than the Gen 5 4Runners. The 360 camera view feature is great as is the digital rear view mirror. I agree with those who think a handler on the A pillar would have been nice. The snorkel whistle is just loud enough to keep me from driving with all the windows down. I'm hoping somebody is going to come up with a solution to this though I don't know if you could put a foam insert or something on there like a microphone wind screen.
The air pump in the back is pretty slick. The tires were over inflated when I got the vehicle so I set the pump for 33 PSI and it adjusted everything for me.
I don't have accurate data for MPG yet because as it turns out, the vehicle was in 4H when I got it and I didn't realize it until I used up half a tank of gas. Which says something positive about backing up in 4-wheel mode. My Gen 1 4Runner is very grabby when backing up and turning in 4-wheel drive. This one does it too but it's much better.
Anyway, this vehicle is going to become my primary K9 search & rescue vehicle so I have some set up to do. The dog likes it so far.
