So weight savings and cost cutting...NO sound deadening under the hood? What else is left off?

There are compromises with new models-many benefits and perhaps a few disappointments.

This keeps me in the considering the Land Cruiser pool.

I wouldn't mind not having it. It's a truck so I wanna hear the engine and don't need extra sound insulation.

The higher trims and premiums also have rubber stripping on the front edge of the rear door to reduce wind noise.

The OEM hood insulation isn't cheap either from Toyota parts, like $450-$500.

Some 2024 Tacoma owners have DIY installed a sound insulation deadening material themselves, which cost just $40.

See this guy's writeup https://www.tacoma4g.com/forum/threads/hood-insulation.5818/post-78423

That's a good option to upgrade the hood.

Love that 'Cutting Edge' color & NO hood scoop.

Recently, I test-drove a Tacoma TRD Offroad. It’s a nice truck—except for the engine. The turbocharged 4-cylinder (non-hybrid) is not what you want to hear. The sound is a chaotic mix of disjointed noises, and the lack of insulation likely made it worse.

Later, I drove the hybrid version of the Tacoma. It sounded much better—more like a Land Cruiser. To be fair, I’d need a side-by-side comparison of the turbo-4 non-hybrid with and without insulation to make a definitive call.

That said, regardless of horsepower and torque numbers, the under hood noise alone would completely rule out any chance of me considering a vehicle with the Turbo-4-only powertrain.
