Gas availability in Southeast Oregon (where I like to travel) is becoming more scarce every year, so I’m looking for the best and safest way to carry extra gasoline. I have a couple of RotoPax cans for gas and water, plus NATO cans that were made in 1951 and 52. How to carry them is the issue?

If I’m pulling the teardrop, the problem is solved, but I’m often without it. How are you solving the problem?

Hitch mount cargo carrier and ratchet straps if you don't mind the departure angle compromise. Harbor Freight has a 500 pound capacity one for $60.

Seems most people carry rotopax on my molle panels. Most aftermarket roof racks have them as an option and I believe there are options for the factory roof rack.

I haven’t looked to see how feasible it is but I wonder if there’s space for someone to develop a larger “extended” fuel tank replacement.

I typically ratchet strap a couple of 5 gallon cans on the roof rack. I’ll fill them up just before I go into the back country, and empty them as soon as I can when I get back to civilization. I try to avoid carrying full cans on the highway.

At some point I’ll add a rear bumper with a gas can carrier, probably something like the one from Dissent Offroad, but not until I’m ready to make this more into an off road focused rig.

if i need to carry extra gas, i would stay away from the hitch mount carry solution.

that limit is roughly 500 lbs but remember that is not static weight back there. that fuel will slosh and cause issues.

i would consider roof rack storage as that is more robust but then again you are limited by weight restrictions on the roof

side molle panels are great for off roading but daily use on pavement i would be leary.

plus having that gas on the side molle or on a hitch will make it easier for someone to walk off with that container vs being on the roof and semi out of sight.

edit: to add to @Tarekith post below, for short trips that require some extra gas in case, the side or hitch option works for in-a-pinch issues. but for daily use and the vehicle is parked for longer periods of time, i would look into roof mount options if you are not going to be removing the side/hitch storage to a more secure location.

For the longer trips I occasionally do that require more fuel I use the Seesucker rotopax mounts on the rear side windows. Works great and easy to take off when not needed.
